Membrane distillation (MD) is a separation process where a micro-porous hydrophobic membrane separates two queous solutions at different temperatures. The hydrophobicity of the membrane prevents mass transfer of the liquid, whereby a gas-liquid interface is created. It requires feed temperature up to 80 degree C and vacuum as driving force. Membrane distillation is useful for salt concentration or recovery from water stream. It is the best option for the replacement of multiple effect evaporator (MEE).

Benefits of CDMS Membrane VS Conventional in case of MEE:
Conventional MEE | CDMS Membrane Plant |
---|---|
Footprint required - huge | Footprint required - small |
Steam requirement is huge | No or minimal requirement of steam |
Scaling is high | Scaling is less as non-fouling MOC of membrane |
Huge operating cost | Very less operating cost |
